Autism Evaluation
Autism Evaluation
Dr. Pinocchio Pediatric Wellness Center, in collaboration with Dr. Crum, provides comprehensive autism evaluations to help families gain clear, accurate answers about their child’s development. Our evaluations are conducted through a collaborative process between occupational therapy and clinical psychology to ensure a thorough, thoughtful, and clinically sound assessment.
We understand that seeking an autism evaluation can feel overwhelming. Our team provides a supportive, structured process so families feel informed and guided every step of the way.
Collaborative, Comprehensive, Evidence-Based Assessment
Autism evaluations are administered by Mallory Pinocchio, OTD, OTR/L, occupational therapist, and completed in collaboration with Dr. JP Crum, Psy.D., clinical psychologist. Dr. Crum reviews and acknowledges each evaluation as part of this collaborative process.
Our evaluation process includes the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2), which is considered the gold-standard assessment tool for autism evaluation. The ADOS-2 is a standardized, research-based assessment that allows for direct observation of social communication, interaction, play, and behavior, and is widely regarded as the most reliable tool for supporting diagnostic decision-making. Not all providers administer the ADOS-2 as part of their evaluation. At Dr. Pinocchio Pediatric Wellness Center, we prioritize the use of gold-standard assessment tools to ensure the highest level of diagnostic accuracy.
In addition to the ADOS-2, the evaluation may include:
- Autism Diagnostic Interview – Revised (ADI-R) with parents or caregivers
- Standardized parent questionnaires and developmental assessments
- Clinical observation of social communication, play, sensory processing, and behavior
- Review of medical, developmental, and educational history
This comprehensive process allows for evaluation of all areas relevant to autism, including:
- Social communication and interaction
- Play and social engagement
- Language and communication
- Sensory processing
- Emotional regulation
- Adaptive functioning
Our Three-Part Evaluation Process
To ensure a comprehensive understanding of your child, the evaluation is completed in three parts:
1. Parent Interview
This portion is completed with parents or caregivers only. During this time, we gather detailed information about your child’s early development, communication, behavior, sensory preferences, social interaction, and daily functioning. This information provides essential context for understanding your child’s developmental profile.
2. Direct Assessment with Your Child
Your child participates in an in-person assessment that includes structured and play-based activities, including administration of the ADOS-2, designed to evaluate social communication, interaction, play skills, and behavior. These activities allow us to observe your child’s strengths and areas of need in a supportive, child-friendly environment.
3. Wrap-Up Discussion and Recommendations
Following the assessment, parents join for a detailed discussion of results. During this time, we review findings, answer questions, and provide individualized recommendations to support your child’s development. Families receive guidance on next steps, including therapy, school supports, and home strategies.
Comprehensive Written Report
Following the evaluation, families receive a detailed written report that includes:
- Diagnostic findings
- Clinical interpretation of results
- Your child’s strengths and areas of need
- Individualized recommendations for therapy, school, and home support
The evaluation is administered and written by Mallory Pinocchio, OTD, OTR/L, occupational therapist, and reviewed and acknowledged by Dr. JP Crum, Psy.D., clinical psychologist, as part of this collaborative evaluation process.
This report may be used to help families access:
- School-based services and IEP eligibility
- Therapy services
- Insurance-covered treatment
- Additional developmental supports

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you bill insurance for autism evaluations?
Autism evaluations at Dr. Pinocchio Pediatric Wellness Center are completed on a private pay basis and are not billed to insurance. Payment is made out of pocket at the time of service.
A referral is not required to schedule an evaluation. Families may contact our office directly to begin the process.
Do I need a referral for my child to receive an autism evaluation?
A referral is not always required. Many families choose to schedule an evaluation directly if they have concerns about their child’s development. In some cases, a referral may be helpful for insurance or coordination of care. Our office can help guide you based on your specific situation.
What happens if my child is diagnosed with autism?
If your child receives an autism diagnosis, we will provide clear recommendations and help guide you through next steps. This may include therapy services, school supports, and additional resources. Our goal is to ensure families feel supported and have a clear plan moving forward.
What happens if my child does not receive an autism diagnosis?
Even if a child does not meet criteria for autism, the evaluation often provides valuable insight into their developmental profile. Families still receive recommendations and guidance to support their child’s strengths and areas of need.
How is this evaluation different from a school evaluation?
School evaluations are designed to determine eligibility for educational services. A comprehensive clinical autism evaluation provides a more in-depth assessment of social communication, behavior, sensory processing, and developmental functioning, along with detailed recommendations for medical and therapeutic support.
How soon should I schedule an evaluation if I have concerns?
If you have concerns about your child’s development, it is appropriate to schedule an evaluation at any time. Early identification can help families access appropriate support and intervention sooner, which can positively impact long-term outcomes.
